Olga Buraya-Kefelian – Workshop 2: 3-Dimensional Knitting

This class is part demonstration with AV presentation and a short lecture about 3D knitwear in hand knitting. It will be part swatch-fest and all inspiration. Olga will present her 3D design philosophy, gearing it to your own discovery of knitwear in the light of 3D!

Format: Lecture and hands-on learning

Length of class: 3 hours

Level of experience: Beginner.
Skills needed: Know how to knit, purl, cast on, and bind off.
Skills learned:
• Introductory lecture on several basic principles of dimensional texture used in knitwear.
• Learning cast on and bind off varieties for stretchy edging and its purpose for dimensional knitwear.
• Learning to work partial knitting and short rows and their differences.
• Swatching a series of techniques and reviewing all the possibilities.
• How to make Ginga Cowl, Moko-Moko Cowl, or Goji Cowl.

Supplies for Class:

For swatching:
• 2-3 colors of 200 yards of worsted weight yarn for swatching
• US 6 (4 mm) knitting needle
• US 7 (4.5 mm) knitting needle

NOTE: If planning to make one of the cowls, please purchase a copy of the pattern and bring to class.

For Moko-Moko Cowl:
• 340 yards of worsted weight
• US 7 (4.5 mm) knitting needle and a spare needle
• Crochet hook F
• Waste yarn in smooth texture and similar weight

For Ginga Cowl:
• 270 yards of smooth texture of worsted weight in light or bright color for Main Color
• 270 yards of smooth texture of worsted weight in light or bright color for Contrast Color
• US 7 (4.5 mm) circular knitting needle, 24”
• Crochet hook H or larger
• Stitch marker
• Tapestry needle
• Waste yarn in smooth texture and similar weight

For Goji Cowl:
• 569 yards of any non-superwash worsted weight yarn
• US 6 (4 mm) knitting needle and a spare needle
• Crochet hook G (4 mm)
• Removable marker
• Waste yarn in smooth texture and similar weight

Homework:

None, unless you plan to work on one of the cowl patterns. If so, work provisional crochet chain cast-on for the cowl of your choice.

Class Size: 30 maximum

Class Fee: $35 for members (paid 2025 Guild membership required at time of registration)

Cancellation policy: Refund of the workshop fee requires a cancellation notification prior to receipt of the class handout.
