The Art of Picking Up Stitches

Learn the tricks to achieving a smooth, perfect pick-up line in any situation. You’ll soon be picking up stitches with ease and confidence.

Level of Experience: Basic knitting skills; able to do homework.

Homework: Knit two swatches before class. Use a smooth, medium-weight yarn in a light color and appropriately-sized needles.
Swatch 1 – garter stitch with one slipped-stitch edge. Cast on 30 stitches. Row 1: knit. Row 2: with your working yarn held in front, slip the first stitch purlwise and then knit the rest of the row. Repeat these two rows until you have knit a square. Bind off loosely.
Swatch 2 – decreasing stockinette. Cast on 30 stitches with the long-tail cast-on. Row 1: purl. Row 2: knit to last 3 stitches, k2tog, k1. Repeat these two rows until you have 3 stitches left and bind off loosely.

Materials:
Bring the same yarn you used for your homework swatches to use in class for picking up stitches. A contrasting color is good.

locking stitch markers
measuring tape
scissors
note-taking supplies
