October Guild Meeting Recap

Our October 6th meeting was very entertaining. Our guest speaker, Krista Ann, was full of information and enthusiasm. She told us how she struggled to find her niche in the world. She started with the music world, went on to receive a teaching degree, and then advertised herself on Craig’s List as a hand knitter. That got her a gig with the costume designer for the Hunger Games. She finally got her big break when Salvador Perez, President of the Costume Designers Guild, took notice and hired her to do hand knits for the Mindy Project (a tv show staring Mindy Kaling). Working with Perez has continued to be profitable for Krista Ann, even though there is a time crunch for every project. One example – Krista Ann had to complete six pieces in less than six weeks, on a size 2 needle! She learned through experience that the pieces she created had to be easily altered. Other projects she knitted for are the movie TAG, the tv show Lucifer and the movie Annabelle. Occasionally, Krista had to make duplicates for the stunt doubles. Through trial and error, Krista Ann developed techniques that worked best to give her pieces the couture look and not something “homemade”. Her biggest “find” was the sewn bindoff and suggested we all try it.
Krista Ann has a free pattern, Blurred Lines Vest, on Knitty. It is one of the pieces worn by Mindy Kaling on The Mindy Project. Krista has recently published a book, Knits that Rock, Volume 1, available through her website ExploreWithKnitsy.com, and has offered Guild Members a $15.00 discount with special code. For members that missed writing down the code during the October Zoom meeting, it will be available in the November News Blast, arriving in your email inbox Thursday, October 29.
