- A ball of plain yarn in a solid color and appropriate needles. Typically, for fingering yarn use needle size US#2.5 (3 mm), for sport yarn use needle size US#4 (3.5 mm), for DK yarn use needle size US#6 (4 mm), and for worsted yarn use US#8 (5 mm).
