Choosing Colors for Fair Isle Designs

Note: This is a 4 part, 2 day workshop held on November 8 and 9. There will be a 1 hour break between the morning and the afternoon sessions from noon to 1 pm each day.

Class Description: Have you wanted to design your own Fair Isle but felt that confronting the mysteries of complex color interactions was too difficult? The infinite number of color possibilities in Fair Isle knitting can be intimidating!  In this 12 hour workshop, we will begin with a discussion of color theory, sources of inspiration, and the specific requirements of Fair Isle design. Guided by your color inspiration, you will choose colors from the entire range of Jamieson’s Shetland Spindrift yarn and work step-by-step through making a speed swatch for color to increasingly complex motifs. When you are done, you will have an understanding of how colors and values are used to create magical Fair Isle effects.

Class Length: 12 hours

Meeting Format: Lecture and Hands-on learning

Level of Experience: Some experience in stranded knitting and reading charts

Homework: Find a few sources of inspiration that you like for their colors: photographs, paintings, textiles, etc. and bring images to class.

Materials and Supplies Needed to Bring to Class: 
US #1-4, 24-32” circular needles (the range of sizes allows you to determine your gauge)
Regular sharpened pencils
Erasers
Scissors
Inspiration photos or items
3-in-1 Color Tool (optional)

Materials Fee: $28 for Shetland yarn for extensive swatching and handouts

Class Size: Maximum 21

Cost: $120 for members ($155 for non-members which includes Guild Membership) for both days.

Payment is by check made payable to San Diego North Coast Knitters Guild (payee name must be written out in full – our bank will not accept checks with abbreviations.) Checks should be mailed to Willa Cather (address in your Guild Directory.) Your registration is guaranteed upon confirmation of receipt of your payment.
Note: register only once for both days.

Cancellation Policy: Please notify us as early as possible if you need to cancel your workshop registration. Refund of the workshop fee requires a cancellation notification at least 48 hours in advance of the workshop. Fees cannot be refunded for cancellations with less than 48 hours advance notice.
