Represent our Guild at the Fair!
It’s time to start thinking about the San Diego County Fair. The County Fair runs from June 3 through July 4 with the fun theme Mad About the Fair. There are (at least) two ways for you to take the Guild to the Fair.
Demonstrate knitting
Once again, our Guild will be on site this summer to represent and demonstrate our craft at the Home & Hobby Exhibit.
All Guild members are invited to participate in the Guild’s San Diego County Fair activities. We will be demonstrating on three different days: Thursday, June 16, Sunday, June 19 and Thursday June 23. Volunteer shifts are 10:30 am to 1:30 pm and 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm on both Thursdays. Sunday shifts are 9:30 am to 1:00 pm and 12:30 pm to 4:00 pm. Of course, you get to enjoy visiting the Fair for the entire day you volunteer to demonstrate!
Would you like to volunteer on one of these days? If so, you’ll get a free one day Fair entry pass and have lots of fun greeting attendees, demonstrating knitting, and talking about our Guild. All you need to do is sign up in advance and show up! You can sign up at a Guild meeting or by email to Carol Myers, Guild Coordinator for the San Diego County Fair. Demonstration days and more information is on the June calendar.
Enter a Home & Hobby Competition
Another great way to partake of the Fair is by entering your knitted items in a Fair Home & Hobby Exhibit competition. There is so much talent among us – we see beautiful work every month at our Show and Share, so now is the time to consider what you’ll be entering in the Fair this year. Entry information is available at the Fair’s Home & Hobby’s Exhibit website page where you can download 2016 Home & Hobby Entry Information and the 2016 Needle Art, Sewing, Weaving and Felting page.
You can register online to compete. There is a $10 entry fee and the deadline for entry is May 6, 2016. You may have two entries per class. All items must be delivered to the Fair between noon and 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 17 or Wednesday, May 18. Hand Knitting is in Division 3702 and there are 18 classes for items ranging from accessories, afghans and socks to ponchos, sweaters and vests. Entry into competition earns you a free entry pass to the Fair; each person entering will receive one free entry regardless of the number of items entered. There are cash prizes in many categoreis—$15 to $100—and donated prizes including two from the Guild.
SDNCKG Awards at the County Fair
Our Guild is proud to present two awards in the Hand Knitting category: Best Original Design and Best Workmanship. Each winner will get a $50 cash award and a one-year Guild membership. Members as well as non-members are eligible for awards donated by the Guild.
