Textile Study Group San Diego Meeting

November 1, 2015

SDNCKG Members are invited to attend the next meeting of the Textile Study Group on Friday, November 6, 2015.

The Guest Speaker is Kathryn Harris whose talk is titled “Textiles in Context.” Kathryn will present an overview of the textile field in an illustrated lecture. She will show images of textile work from the past and also images of contemporary work. This will be a good way to learn about the wide variety of textile techniques and see superb examples of them. She will discuss the reason the term “fiber art” is often used and how, despite the noise of the fast-paced, technologically dense world, the field in thriving.

Kathryn Harris holds an MFA degree in Jewelry/Metals from San Diego State University and an undergraduate degree in Art History from The University of Michigan. She has been involved in the fiber field for over 40 years and began as an educator in 1985, previously working at The Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising. In addition, she worked at the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Her sculptural fiber work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. It has been documented in publications such as The Art of Beadwork by Valerie Hector and two books by Arline Fisch, Crocheted Wire Jewelry and Textile Techniques in Metal. She headed the Fiber Studies program in the Department of Art, Design & Art History at San Diego State University, teaching classes in Fiber Construction and Surface Design until retiring from the University in 2013.
