Minutes of the General Meeting
Tuesday, July 8, 2025, 12:30 p.m.
Encinitas Community Center, 1140 Oakcrest Park Drive, Encinitas, CA 92024
92 Attendees
Vice President Nancy Lerer called the meeting to order at 12:32 pm and introduced Program Chair Theresa Kotanchek.
This month’s speaker, Michele Lee Bernstein, presented her topic “On Designing and Blocking.” She went through her process of designing new patterns to show off various techniques. She relies on stitch dictionaries for inspiration, limiting her focus to accessories requiring two skeins or less.
After Ms. Bernstein’s entertaining insights, Theresa Kotanchek outlined the upcoming summer programs, noting one change in the Sep 2025 Laura Nelkin workshop line-up from Beaded Shawls to a popular class on Stitch Saver cords. These changes are already reflected on the Guild website. Theresa also previewed the 2026 schedule. Not all speakers are confirmed, but the proposed programs are varied and enticing.
Jeanie Milliken reported on the very successful June Stash Sale which raised almost $10K, enabling the Guild to continue to provide quality speakers. All unsold yarn was distributed to area groups who craft for charity.
Sandy Levin spoke of the December Holiday Luncheon and the efforts of her committee to streamline the event per attendee feedback and to comply with California fiscal policies. Changes to customary procedures and deadlines are detailed on the website.
Betty Kemper, Retreats Coordinator, announced there was only one double room remaining available for the August Retreat.
Librarian Donna Mulcahy reported that Ravelry now has the complete list of the almost 700 books in the Guild’s Library and urged members to borrow some. To find the inventory, search for user sdnckg on Ravelry.com [or, while signed into your Ravelry account, follow this link — Webmaster].
Colleen Lukoff, Philanthropy Chair, acknowledged the continuing contribution of finished items available for perusal at the back table. She also had her original patterns for needed philanthropy items for distribution. She advised she would be contacting all those who received yarn from the Stash Sale to provide a list of items made from the donations, thus assuring Guild members who were so generous that no yarn received goes to waste.
Nancy Lerer acknowledged the passing of former Guild member, Didi Drewery, whose celebration of life will be in August with details on the website.
Sydnie Wauson, Webmaster, narrated Show and Share.
Vice President Nancy Lerer adjourned the meeting at 2:05 pm, as members stayed on to visit with the speaker and conduct business at the various Guild tables.
