Project-Based Mosaic Knitting – Mosaic Cowl

Learn the magic of mosaic knitting. You can knit with two colors the easy way – with the strategic use of slipped stitches. You will create intricate looking patterns while using only one color per row! There is no need for stranding or carrying a second color of yarn along the wrong side of the knitting. You will look at garter and stockinette versions of mosaic patterns, work on understanding the concept by swatching a couple of patterns. We will also look at reading mosaic color charts (it is super easy) and then cast on for a new cowl Simone designed for this workshop!

The pattern for the cowl will be included in the class and is exclusive to attendees until after the workshops. The sample shows a solid and a muted variegated color. Simone suggests first-time mosaic knitters pick colors with stronger contrast to alleviate any frustration or confusion while knitting. Once the technique is internalized, all color combinations are fair game.

Materials needed for the cowl: 2 colors of contrasting fingering weight yarn. The cowl comes in two lengths 24″ and 44″ circumference, but both can be knit using two ‘standard’ size skeins of yarn (with leftovers)

Level of Experience: Advanced beginner.

Skills Needed: Participants should know how to knit, purl, work in the round, cast on and bind off.

Homework: None.

Materials to Bring to Class: 2 balls of smooth sport weight yarn in solid, contrasting colors for practice swatches. Materials needed for the cowl: 2 colors of contrasting fingering weight yarn. The cowl comes in two lengths 24″ and 44″ circumference, but both can be knit using two ‘standard’ size skeins of yarn (with leftovers) Appropriately sized needles for your weight of yarn. General knitting notions (such as darning needle and scissors, etc. 

Cost:  $30 for members ($55 for non-members which includes Guild membership through 2019)
