Babs Ausherman

Instructor: Babs Ausherman, “Miss Babs”

Have you ever worried about putting together an appealing combination of colors for a project, or thought that your eye for color just isn’t good enough? Join Babs Ausherman, Miss Babs herself, to explore color combinations and change the way you think about color! By combining and blending watercolors we’ll learn how colors relate to each other. Of course, blue plus yellow makes green, but which green? And how does the amount of yellow you add impact which colors you might choose to pair your green with? We’ll extrapolate from our watercolor experimentation to picking colors for multi-colored knitting projects, or projects in other crafts.

The goal of this class is to talk about color and how we see it. This will be interspersed with playing with watercolors. People often ask Miss Babs what is her favorite color. She has found that she really doesn’t have a favorite color as she can see the benefit of different colors when needed to make a project really stand out. Hopefully this class will help you see the benefit of your less preferred colors.

In this class, each participant will be provided with a small set of watercolors, 2 brushes, a small ruler, a small pan for mixing colors, a pencil, and watercolor papers. Participants will need to bring 2 jars or containers for water, paper towel for tamping their brush, and a recent magazine that has a number of color pictures to be used as a reference for one exercise.

Class Outline:
– Make an initial test of the watercolor set’s colors
– Make gradient colors (dark to light of each)
– Make grids of colors to see the interaction between colors
– Find pictures in magazines that have multiple colors.
– Develop palettes of the colors from the pictures that are pleasing to the individual. The goal here is thinking about how to put colors together in knitting for gradient style patterns, fades, and color work.
– Have attendees share their color sets with everyone else. In doing, we are able to appreciate how someone else sees color and it expands our visual vocabulary.
– Do you have a pattern that you want to figure out colors for? If so, bring it to class and we’ll work together to make a plan.
– Walk away with a plan for putting 2 or more of colors together for a project.
