November Guild Meeting Recap

Karin Skacel speaks to the Guild

Karin Skacel talked to the Guild on November 3 and gave a wonderful summary of her career.  She explained that Addi neeldles are a family owned and operated business that was established in 1829. The tiny German town of Altena supports the Addi needle business, where many families are employed, even from generation to generation.  Thomas Selter, who was the CEO of Addi since the 1970’s, recently turned the position over to his wife Claudia.

Karin’s mother, Ingrid, started the business of Skacel Company and in 2006 Karin bought Skacel from her.  Karin likes to work with companies that are small and well-known to her.  She forms close relationships with those companies.  In 2008, Karin started her own line of yarn, HiKoo.  Skacel is the sole distributor of Schoppel yarn and Zitron yarn and the sole distributor of Addi needles in the U.S.  In 2012, Karin opened her retail establishment, Makers’ Mercantile.

Karin’s hobbies include glasswork, sewing, photography…anything using her creativity.  She showed the group how she created a glass sculpture of a knitted piece.

Karin generously gave away three door prizes and issued a code for a discount at Makers’ Mercantile.

— Laura Brubaker, Programs

At the end of the meeting, the new Guild Board Officers for 2021-2022 were announced. A list of new Guild Officers can be found here.
