KNIT FOR FOOD 2026 RECAP
The 6th annual Knit for Food 12-hour Knit-a-thon (organized by Laura Nelkin) took place on Saturday, April 11, 2026. This campaign is unique in that 100% of the donations are divided equally among Feeding America, World Central Kitchen, Team No Kid Hungry, and Meals on Wheels. This year’s grand total was $559,776, bringing the six-year contribution total to more than $2.3 million.
A five-person Guild team led by Sue Kristiansen placed 18th of 271 teams participating in the nationwide campaign for fundraising, with a team total of $5,045. In addition to Sue, members included Stacy Mann, Tania Marshall, Peggy Redler, and Maria Yamout. Unlike previous years, we each worked at home on our own projects from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. There were Zoom sessions emceed by Laura Nelkin featuring speakers from each of the four organizations receiving the funds, a chair yoga session, and hints on ergonomic knitting from Carson Demers.
The event was very enjoyable and our projects differed. Sue worked on a sweater, completing 10,212 stitches in the allotted time. Stacy worked on a pair of socks, Maria made two hats for Philanthropy, and I used a knitting machine to make 20 beanies for Philanthropy. As you can see, the projects were varied and personal. There were also 115 official meetups around the country with Apricot Yarn at Liberty Station and Hands on Knitting Center in Redlands hosting fundraising crafters during their store hours.
The next campaign will be on March 20, 2027. If you are interested in participating or want to learn more about this event, please contact any of the Guild members mentioned or check Laura’s website and social media channels as the event approaches.
